Anchor Ornamental Iron Fence Specification

1.0 Scope:

This Specification covers standard applications of picket style tubular steel ornamental iron fence systems.

2.0 Reference Standards:

ASTM A526 – Specification for steel sheet, zinc-coated (galvanized) by the hot-dip process commercial quality.

ASTM A513 Specification for electric resistance-welded carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing.

ASTM B117 – Standard test method of salt spray (fog) testing.

3.0 Manufacture:

Ornamental iron sections, posts, gates and accessories shall be furnished by Anchor Fence Co., Inc., 212 Shaw Road, So. San Francisco, CA 94080

4.0 Warranty:

Anchor Fence Co., Inc. warrants this product when purchased through authorized dealers for a period of 10 years. See actual warranty for specific details

5.0 Materials:

5.01 General:

A. The tubing for fence pickets, rails, and posts shall be manufactured from coil steel having a yield strength of 45,000 psi and a tensile strength of 58,000 psi. The steel shall be pre-galvanized to meet the requirements of ASTM A513 with a minimum zinc coating weight of .90 oz. Per square foot (to meet the requirement of ASTM A525-G90).

B. All primary components (pickets, rails, posts, gates, and caps) shall receive a three stage pretreatment to clean and prepare the surface for finish coating.

1st Stage: Iron phosphate surface pretreatments to clean and promote adhesion.

2nd Stage: Clean water rinse

3rd Stage: Non-chromate conversion coating to seal the surface and provide additional corrosion protection.

Finished color coating of Polyester Powder applied by the electrostatic spray method to a thickness of 2-4 mils and baked at 450-500 degrees until cured.

5.02 Fence Sections:

A. Panel sections may be shipped to the project site prefabricated or knocked down to be assembled after delivery. Sections are to be 93 ½" overall length, heights of 4’, 5’, 6’, 7’, and 8’ with 2, 3. Or 4 mid-rails as indicated on the plans.

B. Pickets:

Pickets shall be square tubular steel as indicated on the plans per the following:

C. Rails: Rails shall be 1 ½" x 1 3/8" x 1 ½" U channel steel, 11 gauge weighing 2.21 pounds per ft. with square holes punched 5" on center to allow pickets to pass through.

D. Color: The color shall be black (Special colors available on request please contact our engineering department for additional information.)

5.03 Line and Corner Posts:

A. Shall be 2 ½" square tubular steel 14 gauge weighing 2.665 pounds per foot.

5.04 Gate Posts:

A. For standard swing gates, furnish posts to support single gate leaf, or one leaf of a double gate, per the following gate width:

5.05 Fitting and Accessories:

A. General:

All fittings, accessories and fasteners shall be polymer coated to match fence system.

B. Fasteners:

Fasteners shall be aluminum drive rivets prior to polymer coating. The fasteners shall have a pullout minimum from 500 to 700 pounds. Steel pop-rivets (SD-54-BS) shall have an ultimate shear strength of 2100 pounds and a tensile strength of 1325 pounds.

C. Post Caps:

Pressed steel Polyester coated.

D. Finials:

Malleable cast iron with a minimum 20,000 pound psi hot-dipped Galvanized per ASTM-A-48.

E. Rail Post Brackets:

Malleable cast iron per ASTM A47 Grade 32510 hot-dipped Galvanized per ASTM-A-48.

5.06 Gates

A. General:

All gates and gate hardware shall be supplied in accordance with manufacturer’s standard procedures.

B. Swing Gates:

Shall be supplied with the same cross-section as the fence rails. Gate pickets shall match fence section. Gate frames shall be welded.

C. Aluminum Cantilever Ornamental Sliding Gates:

Shall be manufactured in accordance with Anchor Fence Co., Inc. shop drawings. One piece enclosed track with unique roller bearing system. Gate pickets and style shall match ornamental fence design as specified in Section 5.02.

D. Hinges

Hinges shall be steel. Post (male) and gate frame (female) hinges shall be manufactured to allow a 90-degree opening of gate.

E. Latch:

Fork latch for single swing gates and plunger-bar type for double swing gates, both to permit operation from either side of gate with padlock eye as integral part of latch.

6.00 Execution:

6.01 Installation:

A. Upon receipt at job site, all materials shall be checked to ensure that no damage occurred during handling or shipping. If polyester coating is damaged during installation, contractor shall repair or replace material at their own expense.

B. Dig holes in firm, undisturbed, compacted soil. Footing shall be no less than 10" in diameter and 3’ 6" deep, posts set 6" above bottom of excavation.

C. Set fence posts an 8’ 0" maximum on center. Set gate posts for gate openings as specified on the construction plans.

D. Install all posts and sections plumb and level in accordance to plans in a workman-like manner.
